Because partition panels and pilasters are steel, they can be grounded and coated right where they are bolted to the floor and wall. The charged paint travels around the rolled edges of each door and panel and into the corners where a pilaster meets its shoe, places that a roller leaves thin and a brush leaves streaked. Very little overspray reaches the tile, mirrors and porcelain, which counts in a small room. Stalls can come back in their original colour or in a new one that suits a renovated washroom.

The base of each pilaster gets the most attention. Rust is scraped and sanded back to sound metal and spot primed, and soap scum and cleaner residue are cut from every panel so the new coat can bond. Old graffiti is sanded smooth so it does not ghost through. Hinges, latches, coat hooks and any dispensers mounted on the panels are taped off, and a drop sheet goes down on the floor under each stall. Plastic, phenolic and laminate partitions are not conductive and cannot be refinished this way, so we confirm the material first.
