Railings & Metal Fences in Ottawa

Exterior and interior railings, steel fences, gates and balconies refinished where they stand, with no removal and no reinstallation.

Railings are the job electrostatic painting might as well have been invented for. A railing is dozens or hundreds of pickets, spindles and tubes, and every one of them has a back side that a brush struggles to reach and a conventional spray gun mostly misses. With an electrostatic system the paint carries a charge as it leaves the gun while the railing is grounded, so the coating is pulled toward the metal and wraps around each picket, covering the far side as well as the side facing the sprayer.

That wrap is why a refinished railing looks even rather than streaky, and why far less paint drifts onto the brick, glass and gardens behind it. Balcony railings on condo towers, stair rails in apartment buildings, wrought iron fences around older homes, steel gates at a driveway or a parking entrance: each one is refinished where it is installed, so nothing gets cut off, hauled to a shop and anchored back into concrete.

The finish only lasts as long as the preparation underneath it. Loose paint and scale are scraped and sanded away, rusted spots are taken back to sound metal and primed, the whole surface is degreased and scuff-sanded so the new coat can bond, and walls, decking and plants nearby are masked before any coating goes on. Outdoor work is scheduled around temperature and dry weather, because a coating applied to cold or damp steel will not cure properly.

Capital Electrostatic refinishes railings and metal fences for homeowners, condo corporations and property managers in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Send a few photos and a rough length for the run, and we can talk through what preparation it needs before coming out to look.

Can a rusty railing be painted instead of replaced?

Usually, as long as the steel itself is still sound. Surface rust, peeling paint and a chalky, faded colour are finish problems, and a finish problem is solved by preparing the metal properly and recoating it.

We look closely at posts and base plates, because that is where water sits and where rust can eat into the steel rather than just discolour it. If a post has rusted through or a weld has cracked, that section needs a welder before it needs a painter, and we will point that out rather than paint over it.

What happens to the balcony, deck or walkway around it?

Concrete, brick, glass, siding and decking near the railing are covered with plastic and paper, and drop cloths go down underneath. Charged paint is drawn to the grounded metal, so there is far less overspray than with ordinary spraying, but masking is still done carefully because less is not none.

For balcony railings, residents are asked to clear furniture, plants and barbecues away from the railing before the scheduled day, and to keep off the balcony while the coating sets.
