Storefronts & Aluminum Frames in Ottawa

Faded or scratched aluminum storefront frames, mullions and entrance doors given a fresh finish without taking the glass out.

Aluminum storefront framing takes a beating from sun, road salt and the daily traffic through a busy entrance. Anodized finishes fade and go chalky, painted frames chip along the door stiles and bottom rails, and eventually the frame around a well-kept shop window makes the whole business look tired. Replacing a storefront system means pulling glazing, buying new extrusions and turning the front door into a construction site, when most of the time the frame is perfectly solid.

Electrostatic refinishing leaves the existing frames exactly where they are. Because aluminum is conductive, it can be grounded and coated in place, and the charged paint is drawn onto the frame rather than floating across the glass beside it. Mullions, transoms, door frames, entrance doors and the aluminum around a curtain wall at street level can all be refinished, in a colour matched to the original or in a new one that suits a fresh look for the building.

Anodized aluminum needs particular care, because its hard, smooth surface gives new paint very little to grip. It is cleaned thoroughly, scuff-sanded and coated with a bonding primer suited to the metal before the finish coat goes on. Glass, gaskets, door hardware, signage and the sidewalk are masked off, and the work is planned in sections so customers and staff can keep using the entrance while it is under way.

Capital Electrostatic refinishes storefronts and aluminum frames for shops, restaurants, offices and commercial landlords in Ottawa and nearby communities. If you are weighing a new storefront against refinishing the one you have, a site visit will show which parts can simply be recoated.

Serving Ottawa, Almonte, Arnprior and surrounding area.

Will paint stick to anodized aluminum?

It will when the surface is prepared for it. Anodizing leaves a dense oxide layer that paint cannot bite into on its own, which is why storefronts brushed with ordinary paint so often peel within a season or two.

The frame is cleaned of grime and sealant residue, scuff-sanded to give it texture, and primed with a bonding primer made for non-ferrous metal. The finish coat then bonds to the primer rather than relying on the slick anodized face underneath.

Can the business stay open during the work?

In most cases, yes. Storefronts are refinished one bay or one door at a time, so there is always a way in. Doors that are being coated are propped and posted until they can be handled again.

If the entrance is the only door customers can use, tell us when your quietest hours are and we will plan the entrance itself for that window, leaving the fixed frames for the rest of the schedule.
