Appliances & Equipment in Ottawa

Fridges, range hoods, laundry machines, fitness equipment and radiator covers refinished in place, in a fresh colour or like-new in the old one.

An appliance usually goes out of style or gets scratched long before it stops working. A fridge that still runs well but clashes with a renovated kitchen, a range hood with a yellowed finish, a washer and dryer pair with rust spots along the bottom: each is a candidate for refinishing rather than replacement, which also skips the delivery, the installation and the trip to the recycler.

Because the cabinet of an appliance is metal and can be grounded, electrostatic painting coats it evenly and carries the finish around its edges and seams without drips. It suits the steel panels of fridges, freezers, range hoods, washers and dryers, and it is just as useful on equipment found throughout buildings: machines and weight racks in a condo fitness room, cast iron radiators, and the long runs of baseboard heater covers lining many apartments and offices. Plastic trim, gaskets, glass and control panels are not conductive, so they are masked rather than painted.

Kitchens and laundry rooms collect grease and lint, which makes degreasing the most important step of the preparation here. Rust spots are sanded back and primed, the surface is scuff-sanded, and counters, cabinets, floors and walls are covered before any coating goes on. Interiors, cooktops and anything that runs hot enough to scorch paint are left alone. Radiators and heater covers are refinished with the heat turned off, because coating warm metal spoils the finish.

Which parts of an appliance can be refinished?

The painted steel exterior: doors, side panels, the front of a range hood, the cabinet of a washer or dryer. Those are the surfaces that show wear and the ones that can be grounded and coated.

Handles, dispensers, control panels, door gaskets and plastic trim are masked, and the inside of the appliance is not touched. If the handles are metal and you want them in the new colour too, they can usually be removed and done separately.

Can radiators and baseboard covers be done in winter?

They can, but the heat has to be off in the area being refinished long enough for the metal to cool, and it stays off while the coating sets. In a home that is usually a matter of doing one room at a time.

In an apartment or office building, heating zones are coordinated with the building staff so no one is left in a cold suite for longer than the work requires. Many buildings simply prefer to schedule this work outside the heating season.
