HVAC Units & Covers in Ottawa

Rooftop unit casings, condenser cabinets, louvres and suite fan-coil covers refinished on site, coating the metal housing and leaving the mechanical parts alone.

Heating and cooling equipment spends its life outdoors or tucked into a wall, and its sheet metal shows it. Condensers beside a driveway or a parking ramp get splashed with road salt all winter. Rooftop units sit through freeze-thaw cycles where melting snow pools along seams and screw holes, and rust blooms from those spots first. Inside condo suites, the covers on fan-coil and through-wall units get chipped by furniture and yellow over the years. In most cases the equipment inside still runs fine, and the housing just looks neglected.

A unit casing is galvanized or painted steel, so it can be grounded and refinished where it sits on the roof, the pad or the suite wall. The charged coating pulls onto the panel faces and into the folds, corners and screw heads of the cabinet, which is where rust likes to start. On louvres and grilles, the wrap effect coats the slats evenly from both sides without the heavy buildup that can choke an opening. Very little overspray drifts across the rooftop, so nearby equipment, roofing and neighbouring windows need no wrapping, just a drop sheet under the unit.

Before any work starts, the owner's HVAC contractor or building staff shuts the unit off and locks it out. We coat the casing only. Coils, fins, fan blades, wiring, refrigerant lines, disconnects, service labels and data plates are masked or left untouched. Salt residue is washed off, rust is taken back to sound metal and primed, and galvanized panels get a primer made to grip zinc. Outdoor work waits for dry weather and temperatures the coating needs to cure.

Capital Electrostatic refinishes HVAC casings and covers for property managers, condo corporations, commercial landlords and homeowners in Ottawa and the area around it. Photos of each unit, its make and size, and a note on how the roof is reached help us plan the visit.

Who turns the equipment off, and when does it come back on?

That is done by your HVAC contractor or the building staff who look after the equipment, not by us. The unit is shut off and locked out before we begin preparation, so no fan starts up and nothing pulls air through a wet coating.

Once the coating has set, we let the same person know the unit is clear, and they restart it. For condo suite covers, building staff usually switch off each unit at the suite before we arrive.

Will refinishing affect how the unit runs?

It should not, because the coating stays on the outside of the cabinet. The coil, fins and fan are masked or left uncoated, since paint on a coil would cut down the heat it can move.

Louvres and grilles are coated in light, even passes so the openings stay clear. Service panels are kept free to open, and the nameplate with the model and serial number is masked so a technician can still read it later.
